The Brathay Windermere Marathon

The Brathay Windermere Marathon was held on Sunday 20th May, 2012. Here’s a film and review of the event. I was expecting to run this race in bad weather. It’s not that I’m a pessimist, it’s just that the Lake District has a reputation of being wet, really wet (all those lakes are there for a reason…). And indeed, chatting to other runners at the start line who’d done it before (there was a lot of them, this run seems to attract people to it again and again), they told of having run the…

Wild Swimming Films

During the Spring and Summer of 2012 we took a few month out to explore the Lake District, England’s Number One visitor destination. Most days we tried to swim in some of the 80 tarns, rivers or lakes there. Check out the 5 films below, each of which shows swimming opportunities in different parts of the district. We swam in all of the following during the months of May and June. At other times of the year, my advice may not be relevant, due to weather conditions. Lake Windermere, Wastwater,…

Latterbarrow – 12km Walk and Windermere Swim

This is a full day walk or run, offering some nice views of Lake Windermere and the chance to swim safely in the lake. I used the Ordnance Survey Map 0L7 (The English Lakes, South Eastern Area), and its best to take that map; I think it would be pretty much impossible to find your way without it. Leave the Windermere Marina Village, which is very nicely located for a great many walks, runs and excursions in the area, and walk down the minor road that borders the Village to…

Brant Fell Viewpoint – 4km Walk

This is an easy (if steep in places) walk or run, offering some of the finest views of Lake Windermere. It’ll only take about 90 minutes in total (although it could take more if you wanted to make a picnic and enjoy the views from Brant Fell over lunch or dinner) so perfect for one of those days when you only want to be outside for a little while. I used the Ordnance Survey Map 0L7 (The English Lakes, South Eastern Area), and its best to take that map, although…

Orrest Head Viewpoint – 13km Walk

I’ve now left Stelling Minnis in Kent and will be living in the Lake District, Cumbria for 2 months. So today, my first day in the area, I started off with this run/walk. Actually, I walked a lot of it as I was tired from the overnight drive and also I wanted to do a bit of painting so was forever stopping. If you run it, bear in mind that it’s very much a cross country route so wear trail shoes. I used the Ordnance Survey Map 0L7 (The English…

The Windermere Marina Village, Cumbria, England

We stayed at the Windermere Marina Village for 5 nights when we took part in the Windermere Marathon on May 20th, a beautiful run voted the 2nd best marathon in the UK by Runner’s World. Before we go into details, here’s a short film that I made on arriving at the place. It’s not meant to be a glossy film showing the accomodation at it’s best, just an honest first impression on what the average visitor might encounter on arrival in the Marina. Location  The Windermere Marina Village is on…
