Orrest Head Viewpoint – 13km Walk

I’ve now left Stelling Minnis in Kent and will be living in the Lake District, Cumbria for 2 months. So today, my first day in the area, I started off with this run/walk. Actually, I walked a lot of it as I was tired from the overnight drive and also I wanted to do a bit of painting so was forever stopping. If you run it, bear in mind that it’s very much a cross country route so wear trail shoes. I used the Ordnance Survey Map 0L7 (The English Lakes, South Eastern Area), I think it would be very tough to find your way without it. The signage en route is good, but without the map the place names mentioned on the signs would mean little.

I was booked into stay at the Windermere Marina Village, which is very nicely located for a great many walks, runs and excursions in the area. Very comfy too (they have access to a pool, sauna and jacuzzi: all very welcome after a day on the trails). But check in there isn’t til 3pm-ish so I thought I’d sneak in a quick look-around the immediate area beforehand.

I parked just out of Windermere, on the A591, just east of the Windermere Hotel. The layby there allows unlimited free parking (the one right next to the hotel and most others in town only allow 2 hours). There’s space for about 4 cars.

From here I headed down towards Windermere town, and after 100 metres look right to the pathway signed ‘Common Wood and Orrest Head’. Take this path heading steadily upwards, as views of the lake open up behind you.

The route is well maintained and marked up, and throughout the 13km route I never once got lost. From Orrest Head, where the views of Lake Windermere are superb…

…you head north, first to The Causeway, then Near Orrest, then Moor Howe and onto Dubbs Road that leads above the village of Troutbeck.

When you reach the junction of Dubbs Road and the Garburn Road Track you have the choice of turning left, or carrying on a little. I carried on, to get some views from higher up. There is no circular path though, so you’ll need to come back to this point in order to return. The view north is like this.

When you choose to return, you’ll need to be heading first to Far Orrest, then Crosses Farm, and from there the signposts will take you back to Orrest Head. At which point you’ll regain the view and then retrace your steps back through Common Wood to the car.
